Macy's Early Holiday Gift: Strong 3Q Earnings
The retailer is so optimistic, it has announced it will add three new stores, including one at the Bay Plaza Shopping Center in the Bronx that is scheduled to open in 2014.
Faith Hope Consolo, an analyst with Prudential Douglass Elliman, said the expansion in the Bronx is long overdue. "I think the Bronx has seen a lot of change. I think you've got very important developments going there, easy transportation, and Macy's is expanding in a back yard where they've done well," she said.

Marketplace Report: Unconvinced -
Consumers Don't Believe In Recovery
We spoke with retail analyst and real estate dealer Faith Hope Consolo; she said consumers see plenty of problems with the economy, all of which are affecting confidence and, by extension, consumption.
Consolo pointed to one bright spot: the luxury market. She said that this small percentage of American consumers is doing fine - agreeing that this again points to growing income inequality in the U.S. - but she says even the rich consumer has changed behavior.

Your World With Neil Cavuto: Retail Sales
Cavuto: And my next guest is right, and she knows this whole retail world better than anyone I know. Faith Hope Consolo says that's kind of going to be a theme, right? People are really looking for a reason to have to buy something, right?
Faith Hope Consolo, "Queen of Retail": Well, they're being conservative. You know, Neil, I think that everybody has a new normal. I said this before. Everybody is looking for a sale or a bargain. But there is still that consumer, and that's going to shop, no matter what. They're shopping their bank balance. And the others are being very careful.

Marketplace Morning Report: Pop-up Stores
When vacant store-fronts became an epidemic across the country in recent years, many retailers opted for temporary, pop-up versions of their stores. Now, that pop-up bubble may have burst.
Faith Hope Consolo: There was a lot of vacant space and they had an opportunity to fill those spaces at very nominal cost. But that's not what it's about today.

Nordstrom Opens Charity Store In Soho
Under New Name
Some analysts questioned how much value Nordstrom will get out of a store that doesn't openly connect itself to its parent, but retail specialist Faith Hope Consolo, with Prudential Douglass Elliman said it will strengthen the brand in New York.
"I think it's a brilliant marketing move," she said.
Consolo said it will give shoppers an excuse to splurge, and to venture away from trusted New York mainstays like Saks and Barney's.
Everybody wants to feel philanthropic, everybody wants to give back," she said. "So people will say, 'I want to shop there, it's helping others.'"

Your World With Neil Cavuto: Back-to-School Sales
Neil Cavuto: Before hitting the books, back to school shoppers hit with hikes. Retailers are facing rising costs. A lot of them are hiking their prices 10 percent across the board, we're told. But real estate analyst extraordinaire Faith Hope Consolo is reading the writing on the chalk board. She says that inflation is going to put a big dent on retailers, beyond just this back-to-school season. She has been predicting a lot of the problems they're having. Faith, what are these guys going to do?
Faith Hope Consolo, Retail Analyst: Well, they had to slash prices. The promotions are going to be incredible. And they're depending on some of the new products. But I think what is going to save the retailers is that the inventories are very lean.
Cavuto: They're not going to be caught with a lot of stuff?
Consolo: No, no. This is not going to be like three years ago. That market taught them very well. They are depending on some electronic sales, because there is always a new product.

Disputed Brooklyn Lot
Only One Potential Site for Walmart
An empty lot in East New York, Brooklyn has gotten plenty of attention, as the center of the city's Walmart debate and the focus of rumored discussions between the mega retailer and Related Companies, one of New York's biggest developers.
But the focus should not necessarily just be at that one location. "They just have to open one door, and the rest will be a floodgate," said Faith Hope Consolo of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Retailers Increase Pop-Ups
Bloomberg TV Business News Anchor Monica Bertran discusses the new retail market trends with The Chairman of Prudential Douglas Elliman's Retail Leasing, Marketing and Sales Division, Faith Hope Consolo. "Rather than a panic-driven necessity, sophisticated retailers are perceiving pop-up stores as a way to test a product or a location Chico's Soma Intimates, for example, is using popup locations to test certain markets and malls. Seasonal retailers, such as Halloween chains and Toys R Us, of course have always opened popup or temporary locations for their particular holiday," says Consolo.
